Whatever happened to compassion?

Something I don’t understand is how some people can be rude and 'bitchy' when commenting on things and how some use the excuse ‘I’m only being honest and saying what I think..’ when what they say is simply offensive and unpleasant.

I think some people like to say things under the pretence of it being honesty but it’s a cover for rudeness and a negative attitude. Whatever happened to having some compassion? I suppose the saying ‘if you don’t have anything nice to say, don’t say anything at all’ is quite fitting for these people..
